Tata’s Rs 27,000-crore Assam semiconductor plant may go live this fiscal: Ashwini Vaishnaw
Vaishnaw reviews progress with Himanta Biswa Sarma as Jagiroad project nears launch
NEW DELHI: India’s semiconductor ambitions are inching closer to reality, with the country’s first major chip packaging facility in Assam expected to begin production within the current financial year.
Union minister for information & broadcasting and electronics & information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said the semiconductor plant at Jagiroad is progressing steadily and is on track to commence operations before the end of FY27.
The update came after Vaishnaw met Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday to review the status of the project.
“Met Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Ji. Discussed the progress of the semiconductor plant at Jagiroad. We aim to start production from this plant within this financial year,” Vaishnaw said in a post on X.
The minister also highlighted progress at the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), which is being developed to train young professionals in semiconductor manufacturing technologies and support the country’s growing talent requirements in the sector.
“We exchanged notes on expanding the overall railway network and rail infrastructure in Assam, which includes work on ongoing 1,300-plus km of track expansion and more than 50 Amrit Bharat stations,” Sarma said.
At the heart of Assam’s semiconductor push is the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) facility at Jagiroad. Backed by an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, the project is one of the largest technology manufacturing investments in the Northeast and a key component of India’s efforts to build a domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
Once operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day using advanced packaging technologies such as flip-chip and Integrated System in Package (ISIP).
The plant is expected to play a critical role in reducing India’s dependence on imported semiconductor components while strengthening the country’s position in the global electronics supply chain.
With construction advancing and workforce training initiatives taking shape, the Jagiroad facility is moving from blueprint to production floor. If timelines hold, Assam could soon become home to one of India’s most significant semiconductor manufacturing hubs.
