MUMBAI: India’s automobile market found another gear in May, proving that even scorching temperatures, rising fuel prices and global uncertainty couldn’t put the brakes on consumer demand. Vehicle registrations rose 9.55 per cent year-on-year to 2.53 million units in May 2026, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), marking one of the strongest performances for the month across key vehicle categories.

The month turned into a record-setter for passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and tractors, underlining the resilience of India’s retail auto market. Passenger vehicles led the charge, with registrations surging 23.25 per cent to 402,591 units, while tractor sales grew 11.17 per cent and two-wheeler registrations climbed 7.54 per cent.

“Indian auto retail has held its growth trajectory with May 2026 registering the best-ever May across three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, tractors and overall registrations,” said FADA President C.S. Vigneshwar.

Behind the headline numbers was a familiar but increasingly influential force, rural India.

While urban markets continued to expand, rural demand accelerated at a much faster pace. Passenger vehicle sales in rural areas jumped 30.35 per cent year-on-year, comfortably ahead of the 18.80 per cent growth recorded in cities. Commercial vehicle sales followed a similar pattern, with rural markets growing 8.10 per cent compared with 2.62 per cent in urban centres.

Dealers attributed the surge to favourable farm economics, wedding-season purchases and optimism around a healthy monsoon. The data also pointed to a revival in the small-car category even as SUVs continued to dominate buyer preferences.

The industry’s electrification journey gathered pace as well.

Higher fuel prices nudged more consumers towards alternative powertrains, helping electric vehicles achieve a new milestone. EVs accounted for 9.25 per cent of two-wheeler sales, up sharply from 6.11 per cent a year ago. In the passenger vehicle segment, EVs represented 6.63 per cent of registrations, while CNG vehicles captured a record 23.34 per cent market share.

Combined across categories, electric vehicles crossed the 11 per cent penetration mark for the first time, making May the strongest month yet for EV adoption in India.

Commercial vehicles also remained on the move, with registrations rising 5.29 per cent to 83,823 units. Growth was supported by healthy freight activity, expanding e-commerce volumes and replacement demand. However, dealers flagged concerns over financing delays, rising freight expenses and higher insurance costs linked to tensions in West Asia.

The only speed bump came from the wheeled construction equipment segment, where registrations declined 17.51 per cent due largely to a high base effect from the previous year.

Despite healthy demand, FADA highlighted a growing concern around passenger vehicle inventory levels. Dealer stock increased to 31-33 days at the end of May, compared with 28-30 days in April, moving further away from the association’s recommended benchmark of 21 days. The industry body urged manufacturers to maintain dispatch discipline to prevent inventory build-up.

Looking ahead, the road appears largely clear. More than half of dealers surveyed expect sales growth in June, while nearly 60 per cent remain optimistic about the next three months. Expectations of a normal monsoon, ongoing kharif sowing activity, stable interest rates and India’s projected FY26 GDP growth of 7.7 per cent are supporting confidence across the sector.

Still, industry participants are keeping a close eye on fuel prices, weather patterns and geopolitical developments, all of which could influence consumer sentiment and logistics costs in the months ahead.

For now, however, India’s auto market is showing remarkable resilience. With rural demand accelerating, passenger vehicles posting record numbers and EV adoption reaching new highs, the sector appears to be cruising into the next quarter with plenty of momentum left in the tank.
