MUMBAI: Friendship may be priceless, but this year it comes with a recharge pack. Airtel has rolled out a new Friendship Day feature that lets customers combine a prepaid recharge with a personalised digital Friendship Band, giving a modern twist to one of the occasion’s most enduring traditions.

Available through the Airtel app and valid until 2 August 2026, the feature allows users to recharge an Airtel Prepaid number before attaching a customised digital Friendship Band that can be shared instantly with friends.

The process begins by entering a friend’s Airtel Prepaid number, selecting a recharge plan and completing the payment. Users can then choose from a range of themed digital Friendship Bands inspired by different friendship personalities, including “Gym Buddy,” “Meme Dealer,” “Gedi Partner,” “Foodie Friend,” “Gossip Spiller,” and “Free Therapist.”

Once selected, the band can be shared via WhatsApp or SMS, accompanied by a Friendship Day greeting. Messages sent through SMS can also include the sender’s name, adding a more personal touch to the exchange.

Recipients are not just passive participants. Airtel has built a chain-sharing element into the campaign, allowing those who receive a digital Friendship Band to send one onward to another friend through the campaign page.

The initiative reimagines the traditional Friendship Day ritual for a mobile-first generation by blending digital gifting with a service customers already use regularly. Rather than treating a prepaid recharge as a purely functional transaction, Airtel is positioning it as a simple way to celebrate relationships and stay connected.

The campaign also reflects a wider trend among telecom operators and consumer brands of turning everyday digital interactions into seasonal engagement experiences. As festive and occasion-based marketing increasingly moves online, Airtel is using Friendship Day to add a personal layer to one of its core services, transforming a routine recharge into a gesture of appreciation.
