MUMBAI: One of the pioneers who helped steer India’s advertising industry into the digital era has signed off. Atul Hegde, founder and chairman of YAAP, passed away on Tuesday morning following a heart attack. He was widely regarded as one of the architects of India’s digital marketing ecosystem.

Hegde began his career at Havas, where he served as director of client services between 1995 and 2003. He later joined Vyas Giannetti Creative as chief operating officer before launching Ignitee Digital Services in 2008. Under his leadership, Ignitee emerged as one of India’s earliest digital marketing agencies, helping brands embrace online marketing at a time when the medium was still evolving.

Following his exit from Ignitee, Hegde co-founded Rainmaker Ventures in 2015, an early-stage technology investment fund focused on supporting startups. A year later, he established YAAP, building it into an integrated marketing and technology platform. He also served as director of Oplifi, Brand Planet Consultants India and YAAP FZE in the UAE, reflecting his broader interest in marketing technology, digital transformation and entrepreneurship.

Even in recent months, Hegde remained actively involved in steering YAAP’s future. He had outlined plans centred on artificial intelligence, proprietary technology platforms, acquisitions and international expansion, reflecting his ambition to build globally competitive marketing businesses from India.

Just two weeks before his passing, Hegde shared what would become his final LinkedIn post, reflecting on what he described as a defining year for YAAP.

In the post, he celebrated the company becoming India’s first independent digital agency network to list on the National Stock Exchange, describing the milestone as validation that an Indian-born, digital-first company could remain independent while scaling globally.

He also highlighted YAAP’s acquisition of GOZOOP Group, the launch of AI-powered video intelligence platform Tags, the introduction of creator technology platform Buzzar and the appointment of creative leader Sambit Mohanty. Hegde noted that the company had achieved record revenues, profitability, client retention and new business wins while expanding to more than 450 employees across eight offices in three countries.

The post devoted equal attention to the people who had built the company alongside him. Hegde thanked long-serving colleagues, business partners and mentors, describing employees as the foundation of YAAP’s success. He reserved special appreciation for Raj Nayak, calling him “our guiding light and the calm in all our chaos,” before ending with an optimistic message: “The bell wasn’t the finish line. We are just getting started.”

Those words now stand as a poignant reflection of a leader who remained focused on building for the future until his final days.

Hegde’s passing comes at a time when artificial intelligence, creator-led platforms and marketing technology are rapidly reshaping the communications industry. His influence extended beyond the companies he founded to the entrepreneurs he mentored, the startups he supported and the professionals whose careers he helped shape.

As the advertising and digital marketing fraternity mourns his loss, Atul Hegde will be remembered not only for building successful businesses, but also for helping define India’s transition into the digital age of marketing.
