India qualifies for VALORANT main event at Esports Nations Cup 2026
Team books Riyadh berth after lower bracket fightback; Venky tops Asia with 117 eliminations.
MUMBAI: Game on, nerves off. When the pressure dialled up, Team India simply levelled up. A spirited lower-bracket comeback has powered India into the VALORANT main event at the Esports Nations Cup (ENC) 2026, making it one of only two teams from Asia to qualify for the global nation-based tournament in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from **2 to 29 November 2026.
India secured its berth after overcoming Hong Kong 2-0 in the Asia regional qualifier’s Lower Bracket Final, completing a resilient campaign that saw the team recover from an early defeat to eventual qualifier Japan. The VALORANT competition will run from 8 to 15 November, featuring 32 teams battling for a USD 1.5 million (approximately Rs 14 crore) prize pool.
The Asia qualifiers featured nine teams competing in a double-elimination format. India, led by in-game leader Sagnik Roy (Hellf), fielded Abhirup Choudhury (Lightningfast), Aman Yadav (Hoax), Venkatesh Sharma (Venky) and Daivik Chauhan (Dc), with Norbu Tsering (Karam1L) and Shravana Sahoo (Techno) as substitutes. The squad was coached by Abhishek Bajaj (GodspeedxD), appointed by NODWIN Gaming, India’s National Team Partner for ENC 2026.
India opened its campaign with a commanding 13-2 victory over Nepal before suffering a 5-13 defeat to Japan in the upper bracket semi-finals. Forced into the lower bracket, the team bounced back with a 13-9 win over Pakistan and edged past Mongolia 13-10 to set up a qualification decider against Hong Kong.
With a place at the world stage at stake, India produced its best performance of the tournament, taking the opening map 13-10 before sealing the second 13-6 to book its ticket to Riyadh.
One of the standout performers was Venky, who finished the qualifiers with 117 eliminations across India’s campaign, the highest tally recorded by any player in the Asia regional qualifiers. The finals also attracted significant viewership, with more than 100,000 fans tuning in across official broadcasts and co-streams to watch Japan’s unbeaten run and India’s dramatic resurgence.
India will now compete in a 32-team group stage comprising four groups of eight teams, with the top four from each group progressing to the 16-team single-elimination playoffs. Group-stage matches will be played in a best-of-one format, while playoff matches will be best-of-three, except for the best-of-five Grand Final.
VALORANT becomes the third title in which India has qualified for the ENC 2026 main event, joining Chess and Trackmania. Grandmasters Nihal Sarin and Mitrabha Guha have already secured India’s Chess spots, while Kunal Upreti (Spark) qualified in Trackmania. India’s preparations continue with DOTA 2 regional qualifiers from 30 June to 1 July, Rocket League qualifiers from 17 to 19 July, and MOBA Legends: 5v5! qualifiers scheduled for 15 to 16 August, if required.
