Bodhi Tree wins Assam government mandate to build state OTT platform
Project expands media firm’s push into digital infrastructure and recurring revenues
MUMBAI: In a move that signals its ambitions beyond content production, Bodhi Tree Multimedia Ltd. has secured a mandate from the Government of Assam to develop, launch and manage the state’s official digital content platform.
The project marks a significant step in the company’s transition towards technology-led media services and recurring revenue streams. It also places Bodhi Tree at the intersection of digital public infrastructure, regional content ecosystems and government-backed cultural digitisation initiatives.
The upcoming platform will serve as Assam’s dedicated digital hub for entertainment and cultural content, featuring films, music, heritage programming, live events and creator-led storytelling. It will be available across mobile devices, web platforms and connected televisions, helping regional content reach audiences both within India and internationally.
For Bodhi Tree, the mandate represents a strategic expansion beyond traditional content commissioning. The company will be responsible not only for building the platform but also for managing content strategy, subscriptions, monetisation systems and long-term operations.
Industry observers see the project as part of a broader trend where state governments are increasingly using digital platforms to preserve and promote regional culture while expanding citizen engagement. If successful, the Assam model could become a blueprint for similar initiatives in other states.
The company enters the project with a substantial content background, having produced more than 5,000 hours of programming across over 100 shows. The technology backbone will be developed in partnership with Mogi OTT and supported by Google Cloud infrastructure, alongside a dedicated content delivery network and Kubernetes-based auto-scaling capabilities designed to handle large-scale audience demand.
Commenting on the development, Bodhi Tree Multimedia Ltd. managing director and CEO Mautik Tolia said, “This mandate reflects the expanding role of media companies in building digital ecosystems, not just creating content.” He added that the future of the sector lies at the convergence of storytelling, technology and distribution infrastructure, and that the Assam project could provide a framework with relevance across multiple regions.
The project has already moved into an advanced execution stage, with core technology development largely completed. The focus is now shifting towards branding, content onboarding and building a wider creator and partner ecosystem around the platform.
As India’s regional content market continues to grow and governments embrace digital-first outreach strategies, the Assam mandate offers Bodhi Tree an opportunity to establish itself in a new category of media services. More importantly, it signals how media companies are increasingly evolving from content creators into operators of digital platforms, where technology and distribution can be just as valuable as the stories themselves.
