Google DeepMind and A24 forge research partnership to shape AI filmmaking
Studio and AI lab team up to develop creator-led tools for future storytelling
LONDON: Lights, camera, innovation. In a move that could reshape how films are made in the AI era, Google DeepMind and A24 have announced a first-of-its-kind research partnership aimed at developing new creative tools and workflows for filmmakers.
The collaboration brings together one of the world’s leading AI research labs and a studio renowned for championing filmmaker-driven storytelling. The goal is to ensure that future creative technologies are developed with direct input from the artists who will ultimately use them.
Under the agreement, researchers from Google DeepMind and creatives from A24 will work together across multiple long-term projects, embedding AI innovation directly into the filmmaking process. The partnership is designed to help filmmakers experiment with new techniques while providing Google DeepMind with real-world feedback from leading storytellers.
As part of the collaboration, Google has also made an investment in A24, underscoring its commitment to the future of AI-powered creative tools.
Rather than focusing on a single product or technology, the partnership will function as an ongoing research and development initiative. Both organisations said the specific objectives, technical outcomes and creative milestones will evolve over time as projects are tested, refined and expanded.
The initial focus will be on bridging the gap between cutting-edge AI research and next-generation entertainment, creating opportunities for filmmakers to explore new storytelling possibilities while maintaining creative control.
Commenting on the partnership, Google DeepMind co-founder and chief executive officer Demis Hassabis said: “We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them. By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision.”
The announcement comes as the entertainment industry continues to explore how artificial intelligence can support creative work, from visual effects and production workflows to story development and content creation. By placing filmmakers at the centre of the development process, Google DeepMind and A24 hope to create tools that enhance creativity rather than replace it.
While the partnership is still in its early stages, it signals a growing trend of closer collaboration between technology companies and creative studios as both industries seek to define the future of storytelling in the age of AI.
