India TV shifts Rajat Sharma’s Aaj Ki Baat to 8:30 pm
Flagship news show moves earlier as it crosses 440 million lifetime viewers.
MUMBAI: Prime time is getting a head start, and one of Indian television’s most familiar voices is moving up the clock. India TV has announced a strategic timing change for its flagship news analysis programme, Aaj Ki Baat with Rajat Sharma, which will now air at 8:30 pm from 15 June 2026, bringing one of the country’s most-watched news shows into an earlier prime-time slot.
The move comes as the programme continues to post formidable audience numbers. According to BARC India (2+ India) data, Aaj Ki Baat has amassed a lifetime reach of more than 440 million viewers, cementing its position among India’s most influential television news programmes.
The show’s momentum remained strong through 2025, recording an average of 38 million viewing minutes every day, underscoring its ability to attract and retain audiences in an increasingly fragmented media landscape.
What makes those numbers particularly valuable is the profile of the audience. India TV said 73 per cent of viewers belong to the 31-plus age group, while 57 per cent come from premium NCCS A households, making the programme a significant destination for advertisers targeting mature and affluent consumers.
At the centre of the show’s appeal is veteran broadcaster Rajat Sharma, whose decades-long career has made him one of the most recognisable figures in Indian television journalism. From covering political transitions spanning the eras of Indira Gandhi to Narendra Modi to witnessing more than 150 national and state elections, Sharma has remained a constant presence through some of the country’s most defining political moments.
His influence extends beyond television. Sharma’s long-running interview programme, Aap Ki Adalat, remains one of India’s most enduring TV formats, while his digital footprint continues to grow with more than 11.5 million followers on X and 2.6 million followers on Facebook.
The earlier time slot signals India TV’s intent to strengthen its evening news lineup by placing one of its strongest editorial properties at the heart of prime time. In an era where viewers increasingly consume news across multiple screens and platforms, the network is betting that trusted analysis delivered earlier in the evening can capture attention before the nightly news cycle reaches full throttle.
For audiences, the change means authoritative commentary arrives half an hour sooner. For India TV, it is a strategic repositioning of one of its most valuable assets at a time when competition for prime-time eyeballs remains fiercer than ever.
