MUMBAI: Kolkata’s shadows are about to get a lot darker and this time, they come wearing a badge. Zee5 has unveiled Brown, a neo-noir psychological crime thriller that swaps straightforward whodunnits for a murkier journey through trauma, guilt and redemption. Premiering on 5 June, the Hindi-language series marks Karisma Kapoor’s OTT return in what may be her most unconventional role to date.

Set amid the rain-soaked alleys, fading grandeur and moral chaos of Kolkata, Brown follows Rita Brown, a once-celebrated police officer whose career and personal life have unravelled under the weight of past mistakes. When a string of brutal murders rattles the city, beginning with the killing of a powerful businessman’s daughter, Rita is reluctantly drawn back into the force for one final shot at redemption.

But the investigation quickly becomes more than a hunt for a killer. Partnered with troubled junior officer Arjun, played by Surya Sharma, Rita finds herself navigating a city riddled with corruption while confronting the emotional wreckage she has spent years trying to outrun.

Directed by Abhinay Deo and produced by Zee Studios, the series also stars Jisshu Sengupta, Soni Razdan and Ajinkya Deo in pivotal roles. Rather than relying solely on crime-solving mechanics, Brown leans heavily into psychological storytelling, with its characters carrying as many scars as the crimes they investigate.

The series positions Kolkata as more than just a backdrop. Its cultural richness, class divides, fading charm and restless energy seep into every frame, turning the city into a character in its own right. Add a haunting music score inspired by the city’s soul and the result is a thriller steeped in atmosphere.

For Karisma Kapoor, Rita Brown represents a dramatic departure from familiar territory. The character is emotionally bruised, deeply flawed and often battling herself as fiercely as she battles crime. That internal conflict sits at the heart of the series, where redemption proves far more elusive than arresting a suspect.

With six shades of grey for every black-and-white answer, Brown arrives at a time when audiences are increasingly gravitating towards layered crime dramas that prioritise character over spectacle. As Kolkata’s darkness deepens and old wounds resurface, the series promises a thriller where the biggest mystery may not be who committed the crime but whether its protagonists can escape their own pasts.
