New subscription push aims to boost AI revenue beyond Meta’s advertising business

CALIFORNIA: Meta is putting a price tag on perks, and the social media giant appears ready to cash in on its power users. In a significant shift away from its long-standing ad-only revenue model, Meta has unveiled a sweeping rollout of premium subscription plans across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, alongside new paid tiers for Meta AI.

The move was announced by Meta executive Naomi Gleit and marks one of the company’s biggest attempts yet to diversify revenue streams as it pours billions into artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centers.

At the heart of the strategy is a layered subscription ecosystem that blends social media perks, AI access and business tools under a broader umbrella called Meta One.

The first part of the rollout focuses on consumer-facing “Plus” subscriptions for Instagram and Facebook, each priced at $3.99 per month. These plans target heavy users, creators and micro-influencers looking for deeper audience insights and more control over how they post and engage online.

Features include detailed Story analytics, the ability to secretly preview Stories without appearing in viewer lists, extended Story visibility beyond 24 hours, and the option to publish content directly to a profile and highlights without pushing it into followers’ main feeds. Subscribers will also gain access to custom app icons, exclusive fonts, animated reactions and expanded audience controls that go beyond the standard “Close Friends” feature.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp Plus, priced at $2.99 a month, leans more heavily into personalization. Users will be able to unlock premium stickers, custom chat themes, advanced inbox organization tools and additional pinned chats.

The company is also placing a major bet on AI subscriptions. Under the new structure, basic use of Meta AI will remain free, but users who rely heavily on AI-generated images, videos or long-form reasoning tasks will eventually encounter usage limits unless they upgrade.

The entry-level AI tier, Meta One Plus, will cost $7.99 per month and is designed for casual creators and frequent AI users. A higher-end Meta One Premium plan, priced at $19.99 monthly, offers the same features but with significantly expanded usage allowances. Interestingly, Meta is bundling social media premium features alongside its AI subscriptions, effectively encouraging users to stay within the company’s ecosystem rather than jumping between standalone services.

The AI subscription rollout will initially launch in select test markets including Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia before expanding globally.

For businesses and creators, Meta is revamping its professional support structure through dedicated creator and business subscriptions, which are initially being tested in Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh.

The Meta One Essential tier, priced at $14.99 a month, provides growth and management tools for small businesses and creators. A more advanced $49.99 plan, named Meta One Advanced, includes enhanced visibility in Facebook and Instagram feeds, prominent “Follow” buttons on Reels, and access to live human customer support—an area that has long frustrated businesses dealing with account suspensions, verification problems and advertising issues. Meta also plans to integrate dedicated AI business agents into this higher tier in the future.

Importantly, the company clarified that Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp will remain free to use. The paid offerings are positioned as optional upgrades aimed at users seeking enhanced functionality, deeper insights or AI-heavy workflows. The company also confirmed that the new subscriptions will not replace Meta Verified, its separate identity verification and blue-tick program.

The broader ambition, however, is clear. Meta eventually plans to merge these fragmented subscriptions into one unified “Meta One” package spanning social media, AI and creator tools.

As social platforms increasingly chase subscription revenue alongside advertising, Meta’s latest move signals a future where likes may stay free, but premium reach, AI horsepower and advanced visibility tools could soon come with a monthly bill attached.
