The former Maruti Suzuki executive will lead strategy, EVs and future mobility growth
GURUGRAM – Hyundai Motor India is revving up its long-term strategy with a seasoned mobility leader in the driver’s seat. Gaurav Mathur has joined Hyundai Motor Company as vice president and head of corporate planning, bringing over 22 years of experience across automotive strategy, EV development, innovation and future mobility.
Mathur joins Hyundai after a nearly 22-year stint at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, where he held several leadership positions across product innovation and electric vehicle development. Most recently, he served as vice president for EV development, overseeing programmes ranging from concept-to-launch execution to innovation lab initiatives.
At Hyundai Motor India, he will lead long-term corporate strategy and business planning, while also focusing on manufacturing expansion, export growth, operational optimisation, innovation partnerships and future mobility businesses including EV ecosystems, connected technologies and AI-led transformation initiatives.
Announcing his new role, Gaurav Mathur said he is excited to begin a new professional chapter after more than two decades of learning and leadership in the automotive industry. He added that India’s emergence as a global manufacturing and innovation hub presents major opportunities for building future-ready mobility ecosystems that combine sustainability, technology and customer-centric growth.
Mathur also reflected on a quote he encountered during his time at Stanford University Graduate School of Business, which inspired him to embrace new challenges and continuous learning throughout his career journey. Beyond industry leadership, Mathur has built a strong academic profile. He pursued mechanical engineering before earning an MBA in marketing and strategy from Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, where he graduated with a gold medal in marketing. He later completed the Stanford LEAD programme at Stanford Graduate School of Business and was recognised as a Stanford LEAD Distinguished Scholar.
During his time at Maruti Suzuki, he also contributed to product innovation, EV strategy and future mobility initiatives as the company expanded its electric mobility ambitions in India.
The appointment comes at a time when India’s automotive sector is accelerating investments in EVs, connected mobility and next-generation transportation technologies, with global manufacturers competing to strengthen their presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing auto markets.
As the race toward future mobility gathers pace, Hyundai’s latest leadership move signals that the company is betting heavily on strategic planning, innovation and electric transformation to drive its next phase of growth.
