Astrotalk joins the unicorn club, and the stars have aligned

A Noida astrology app proves that spiritual tech can be seriously profitable business

NOIDA: Forget crystal balls and tarot cards, the smartest bet in Indian tech right now might just be the stars. Astrotalk, the astrology and spiritual-tech platform, has vaulted into the unicorn club at a $1 billion valuation, and it has done so through the unglamorous but rather elegant route of an ESOP buyback. More than 100 employees are cashing in on the company’s growth, and crucially, the money is coming from Astrotalk’s own profits rather than a fresh funding round. That distinction matters enormously.

Most Indian startups that reach unicorn status do so on the back of a primary funding round, diluting founders and burning investor cash to justify a headline number. Astrotalk has instead built genuine earnings and used them to reward the people who built the business. Gupta, the co-founder and chief executive, called the milestone especially rewarding precisely because it was self-funded. He has a point. A unicorn valuation earned through profitability rather than promises is a rarer and rather more durable badge of honour.

The numbers back the swagger. Astrotalk posted revenue of Rs 1,176 crore and profit before tax of Rs 285 crore in FY25, a margin that would make most consumer internet firms blush. Its current revenue run rate has already crossed Rs 2,500 crore, suggesting the astrology-to-commerce pivot is working rather than merely window dressing. Founded in 2017, the company has quietly expanded from one-on-one astrology consultations into adjacent spiritual and commerce categories, building a business model that looks less like a novelty app and more like a genuine platform play.

Backing has come from Left Lane Capital and Elev8 Venture Partners, with Left Lane writing a $20 million cheque in February 2024 and topping it up with another $14 million four months later. That is relatively modest capital for a company now valued at ten figures, which only reinforces the profitability story. Jain, the other co-founder, framed the buyback as an exercise in building an ownership culture, a phrase startups use often and mean rarely. Here, with actual cash changing hands from actual profits, it carries weight.

India’s spiritual-tech category has long been dismissed as a curiosity, more meme than market. Astrotalk’s rise suggests otherwise. With hundreds of millions of Indians still turning to astrology for everything from career choices to marriage compatibility, the total addressable market was never really in doubt. What was missing was a company willing to professionalise it, monetise it responsibly, and scale it without losing money along the way. Astrotalk appears to have cracked that formula, and its next ambition, an expanded global footprint and deeper investment in technology and talent, looks entirely earned rather than aspirational.
