Mumbai, July 26, 2006: In search of wine… in search of women… in search of themselves. Watch this comically mismatched pair, uncork life, as they head off on a wine-tasting road trip in Alexander Payne’s emotional and heartfelt comedy, SIDEWAYS. An Academy Award winner, the film grossed US$71,444,367 at the worldwide box office. Tune in to the exclusive premiere this Friday night, July 28th at 9 p.m. only on Star Movies.

The misadventures begin when Miles (Paul Giamatti), an un-recovered divorcé and would-be novelist with a wine fixation, decides to gift his old college buddy and washed-up actor Jack (Thomas Haden Church) with a celebratory trip to the vineyards of Santa Barbara wine country the week before Jack’s wedding. The two couldn’t be an odder couple. Jack is an over-sexed charmer; Miles is a sad-sack worrier. Jack is looking for his “last taste of freedom;” Miles is just hoping to not get even more depressed. Jack is fine with cheap Merlot; Miles pines for the perfect Pinot. Indeed, the only thing they seem to share in common is the same heady mix of failed ambitions and fading youth. And yet, as they make their way up the coast, Miles and Jack soon find themselves drowning in wine and women (Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen).

When Jack falls head-over-heels for a local wine pourer and threatens to call off his nuptials, Miles tries to keep his friend on the straight and narrow. But Miles’ own romantic encounter with a wine-savvy waitress interferes and sends them both careening headlong into reality. Now, the wedding approaches and with it the certainty that Miles and Jack won’t make it back to Los Angeles unscathed or unchanged . . . if they get there in one piece at all.

DID YOU KNOW?
” Sandra Oh learned how to ride a motorcycle for her part in this film
” Alexander Payne selected the film’s wine list himself
” George Clooney campaigned for the part of Jack, but Alexander Payne thought Clooney was too big a star
” Director ‘Alexander Payne’ met and started dating actress Sandra Oh while filming. They later married, though they subsequently divorced
” Most of the wine used in the wine-tasting scenes was non-alcoholic. The actors wound up drinking so much of it that it made them nauseated (and had to periodically switch to the real thing to clean out their palates)

Make sure you savor this film, as vintages of this quality don’t happen every season. Tune in to the exclusive premiere of ‘SIDEWAYS’ this Friday, July 28th at 9 p.m. on STAR MOVIES.
