MUMBAI: There are communications careers built quietly behind the scenes, and then there are careers that quietly build the scenes themselves. Prasidha Menon’s belongs firmly to the latter category, and her latest move, heading product communications for Apple in India, is the kind of appointment that makes the rest of the industry sit up and take note.

Menon joins Apple after three years and seven months at Airbnb, where she rose from head of communications for India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan to brand and product communications lead for Asia Pacific, shaping how the hospitality platform told its story across some of the world’s most complex and culturally varied markets. Before that came a brief but consequential run as director and head of brand, marketing and communications at Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, and two years and eight months at OYO, where she climbed from head of communications to vice president and global head of communications, steering both external and internal narratives for a business scaling at breakneck speed.

Her earlier chapters at Uber are arguably where the product communications instinct was forged. Menon spent close to two years there, first as product communications lead for India and then as head of communications for India and South Asia, learning to translate complex technology and policy questions into stories that landed with ordinary users and regulators alike. Before Uber, four years and eight months at Edelman India, rising from account manager to account director across Delhi and San Francisco, gave her the agency-side grounding in reputation management that every good in-house communicator eventually draws on.

What distinguishes Menon’s 18-plus year career is its consistency of thread: product, brand, corporate reputation and consumer storytelling, deployed across wildly different sectors, from healthcare and hospitality to mobility and now consumer technology. She describes her own approach as building categories, enabling product adoption and creating culturally relevant work, and the roster of global brands she has shaped, Uber, OYO, Airbnb, and now Apple, suggests that description is more track record than tagline.

For Apple, a company famous for controlling its narrative down to the last comma, bringing in a communicator this fluent in product storytelling across India’s noisy, fast-moving market is a considered bet. It also marks a rare instance of one of Silicon Valley’s most tightly guarded brands opening its India comms leadership to someone forged almost entirely outside it, a vote of confidence in local expertise that speaks for itself.
