Kingfisher brings comedy commentary feed to IPL Playoffs

JioHotstar feed blends cricket banter, comedy and live playoff action.

MUMBAI: The IPL playoffs are getting a little less “howzzat” and a lot more “hangout”. As cricket fever hits peak temperature, Kingfisher Premium Packaged Drinking Water is turning the commentary box into a full-blown party zone with the return of the Kingfisher Good Times Hangout on JioHotstar. Back after its debut during the TATA Women’s Premier League earlier this year, the alternate live commentary feed is returning for the TATA IPL Playoffs with a louder line-up, sharper humour and enough cricket banter to keep fans entertained between every yorker and six.

This season’s hangout squad features cricket veterans Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina alongside comedians Angad Singh Ranyal, Danish Sait and Gurleen Pannu. Presenters Aanchal Agarwal and RJ Mantra round off the line-up, promising a viewing experience that feels less like traditional sports broadcasting and more like watching cricket with your funniest friends.

The dedicated feed will run live during the IPL Playoffs from 26 May to the Final on 31 May, beginning 6:30 PM onwards on JioHotstar. Viewers can access it by selecting the Kingfisher Good Times Hangout option under the Audio & Subtitles tab during the live match stream.

But this is not just another celebrity add-on to cricket coverage. It reflects a much bigger shift in how younger audiences are consuming live sport, where analysis alone is no longer enough, and entertainment, humour, memes and culture increasingly shape the viewing experience.

In a digital era dominated by second screens, reaction clips and social chatter, brands are moving beyond sponsorship logos and trying to become part of the conversation itself.

“Cricket in India is never just about the sport. It’s about the moments you share while watching it,” said United Breweries Limited chief marketing officer Vikram Bahl.

“The Kingfisher Good Times Hangout was born from a simple belief that the best cricket memories happen when great sport meets great company. With the TATA IPL Playoffs, we wanted to give fans a viewing experience as dynamic as the tournament itself,” he added.

The initiative also deepens Kingfisher’s partnership with JioStar, as streaming platforms continue experimenting with alternate feeds and creator-led sports experiences to attract younger viewers who increasingly prefer personality-driven content over conventional commentary.

“At JioStar, we are committed to building an ecosystem where brands go beyond visibility and create experiences that fans genuinely value,” said JioStar head of sales for sports Anup Govindan.

“The Kingfisher Good Times Hangout is exactly that kind of innovation which becomes part of the fan experience and creates a brand environment that younger audiences actually want to spend time in,” he said.

The format itself is designed to mirror the energy of a real living-room cricket session complete with spontaneous reactions, jokes, cultural references and the occasional emotional overreaction after a dropped catch.

And that may well be the point. In today’s IPL universe, cricket is no longer just watched. It is clipped, memed, reacted to, debated and shared in real time. Commentary, much like the sport itself, is becoming entertainment-first.

For Kingfisher, the strategy reinforces its long-standing positioning around shared moments and social experiences. For JioHotstar, it is another reminder that sports streaming is rapidly evolving beyond the traditional broadcast model.

Because in modern cricket culture, sometimes the side commentary becomes the main event.
