DUBAI:Twenty years in the Gulf’s car business will teach anyone one thing: the market rewards those who can sell, and remembers those who can also tell a story.

Karim Corm has just done both, swapping a three year stint as deputy general manager of sales at Infiniti for the same title, on the marketing side, at Nissan Middle East. It is a lateral move on the org chart and a significant one in substance, taking a career built almost entirely on revenue targets and dealer networks and pointing it at brand positioning instead.

The shift makes more sense than it might first appear. Corm’s résumé reads like a tour of the region’s automotive establishment: Ford Middle East and Africa for five years, running sales across the UAE, Lebanon, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, General Motors as regional marketing manager, a brand director role at Fiat Chrysler steering Alfa Romeo and Fiat, and a spell at Seez, a digital car marketplace, heading business development. Add an early stint at Leo Burnett, the advertising agency, and the marketing pivot looks less like a career change and more like a return to where he began.

That breadth matters in a region where car buying is undergoing its own quiet transformation. The Gulf’s automotive market remains fiercely competitive, with Japanese, American and European brands all fighting for share in a customer base that increasingly researches, configures and even negotiates online before ever setting foot in a showroom. Nissan, like most legacy manufacturers, is under pressure to make its brand story land with a generation of buyers who scroll before they shop. Having someone in the marketing seat who has actually run a sales floor, chased quarterly numbers and understood what turns a browser into a buyer, is no small advantage.

Corm’s own framing of the move, thanking colleagues at Infiniti and describing marketing as a chapter full of fresh opportunities, is the sort of career transition companies in the region would do well to make more often. Executives who move between sales and marketing tend to bring a discipline that pure marketers sometimes lack: an instinct for what actually converts, not just what looks good in a campaign deck. For Nissan NMEF, headed into a stretch of new launches and projects, that instinct could prove rather useful.
