MUMBAI: Gemini has hit the billion-user club, and Google is wasting little time counting the next billion. The company’s Gemini app has crossed 1 billion monthly active users, marking a major milestone for Google’s consumer AI push and making it the 14th Google product to reach the billion-user mark.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on 11 August, describing Gemini as the company’s fastest-growing product ever. The latest figure comes just weeks after Google reported 950 million monthly active users for Gemini during its second-quarter 2026 earnings call, indicating that the app added around 50 million monthly users in a short span.

Google also said Gemini’s daily active users have tripled over the past year, suggesting that the growth is not simply about users trying the AI assistant once, but increasingly making it part of their everyday routines.

Voice is emerging as one of the key ways users interact with Gemini, with 63 per cent of users speaking directly to the assistant. Parents are particularly inclined towards voice-based interactions, being 43 per cent more likely to use voice for everyday tasks, according to Google.

Gemini is also moving beyond the traditional chatbot format. One in five Gemini Live interactions involves more than voice, with users turning on live camera feeds or sharing their screens to receive real-time assistance. Google said DIY users and students are among those using these visual capabilities.

For students, Gemini is increasingly becoming an attachment-heavy affair. Google said 38 per cent of school-related requests made through the service include an attachment, reflecting growing use of the assistant for working with documents and other learning material.

The AI assistant is also becoming a creative tool, with Gemini now generating more than 150 million images every day. Google said the ability to generate images, video and audio within a single experience is helping users, including small businesses, create marketing material and other content.

On Android, Gemini can automate tasks across more than 40 popular applications, including booking rides and making restaurant reservations. The service is also gaining ground on Apple’s ecosystem, with more than 100 million active users on iOS.

Google said macOS power users send around twice as many prompts as users on other surfaces, pointing to a particularly heavy usage pattern among users on Apple’s desktop platform.

The billion-user figure specifically refers to the Gemini app and does not include Gemini-powered AI features embedded across Google’s other products. Google has separately reported more than 1 billion monthly active users for AI Mode in Search.

Gemini’s milestone also puts Google in closer competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June, according to the figures cited in the information provided. Both companies are increasingly pushing their AI assistants beyond standalone chat interfaces and into search, productivity, operating systems and everyday digital tasks.

Google has continued integrating Gemini across products including Search, Workspace and Android, while expanding its AI models and assistant capabilities. The company’s next challenge is therefore less about reaching a billion users and more about turning that enormous audience into habitual users.

With Gemini already crossing the billion mark, Google’s AI race has moved from proving people will use generative AI to figuring out just how much of their digital lives they are willing to hand over to it.
