IKEA gives its iconic meatballs a Chettinad makeover in India
Chef Nehal Karkera brings family-kitchen flavours to the Swedish favourite
MUMBAI: IKEA’s meatballs are taking a trip down south. The Swedish furniture giant is giving its globally recognised comfort food a distinctly Indian makeover, pairing the classic meatball with a rich, aromatic Chettinad curry as part of a limited-edition collaboration with chef Nehal Karkera.
The new menu, available this August at IKEA restaurants in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, brings together the familiar Swedish meatball and the bold spice profile of Chettinad cuisine, with flavours inspired by Karkera’s family kitchen.
The collaboration grew out of Karkera’s visit to IKEA of Sweden during SMAKFEST 2025. The chef said the experience prompted him to explore how the Swedish classic could find a place on an Indian dining table.
“I’ve always believed that the food we remember is the food that makes us feel something,” Karkera said, adding that the collaboration allowed him to bring the flavours he grew up with to a globally recognised IKEA dish.
IKEA said the new offering was developed with its India food team to combine bold regional flavours with the familiarity of its meatballs.
The brand’s meatballs have been on its menus since 1985 and have evolved into one of its most recognisable food offerings across markets. Over the decades, the dish has also taken on local flavours in different parts of the world.
Kevin Johnson, country food manager at IKEA India, said the collaboration offered a way to celebrate more than four decades of the meatball while giving it a local twist.
The limited-edition menu also goes beyond chicken, offering vegetarian and seafood options.
The Chicken Meatballs in Chettinad curry features chicken meatballs served in a rich, aromatic Chettinad curry and is priced at Rs 280.
For vegetarians, the Veg Falafel in Chettinad curry combines golden falafel with the same curry and is also priced at Rs 280.
The most premium option is Salmon in Chettinad curry, priced at Rs 890.
The menu is available for a limited period across IKEA restaurants in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
For IKEA, the collaboration offers a fresh way to localise one of its best-known food products without losing the comfort factor that made the meatball a global favourite. This time, though, the journey from Sweden to India comes with a generous helping of Chettinad spice.
