Russo brothers salute Spider Man Brand New Day box office milestone
Endgame directors hail record opening as Spider Man heads to IMAX from 7 August
MUMBAI: Every superhero loves a good handover, and this time it wasn’t a shield or a hammer, it was the box office crown. Marvel’s latest web-slinging sensation has swung past a record once thought untouchable, earning applause from the very filmmakers who set it.
The directors of Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo, have congratulated the cast and crew of Spider-Man: Brand New Day after the film shattered Endgame‘s record for the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history.
Taking to Instagram, the Russo brothers shared a specially commissioned illustration by artist Bosslogic, depicting Spider-Man draped in the American flag and wearing the Infinity Stones as rings. The accompanying message read: “The gauntlet has been passed.”
The brothers extended congratulations to director Destin Daniel Cretton, stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Sadie Sink, Florence Pugh, Michael Mando and Marisa Tomei, along with producers Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O’Connor, praising the entire cast and crew for making domestic box office history.
The symbolic message carries added significance as the Russo brothers prepare for their own Marvel return with Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled to release in December, where they will have an opportunity to reclaim the opening weekend record.
The latest milestone adds to an extraordinary run for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has rewritten multiple box office records since its release, cementing itself as one of the fastest-growing global theatrical successes in Marvel’s history.
The film’s momentum is expected to continue as it expands its premium format footprint. Beginning 7 August, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be screened in IMAX theatres across North America, while The Odyssey continues its exclusive 70mm IMAX run until 16 September.
For Marvel fans, the baton has been passed but with Avengers: Doomsday waiting in the wings, the race for box office supremacy is far from over.
