Spider Man Brand New Day races past $1 billion in just six days

MUMBAI: With great power comes great box office. Spider-Man has swung past yet another milestone, turning cinemas into cash registers as Spider-Man: Brand New Day smashed through the $1 billion mark at breathtaking speed.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, has crossed $1 billion (around Rs 8,700 crore) at the global box office after just six days in theatres, becoming the second-fastest film in history to reach the milestone.

Only 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which collected $1.2 billion (around Rs 10,440 crore) during its opening weekend, reached the landmark faster.

The superhero blockbuster has amassed $407 million (around Rs 3,541 crore) in North America within four days, making it the fastest film ever to cross $400 million (around Rs 3,480 crore) in the domestic market. Overseas, the film has added $645.8 million (around Rs 5,619 crore), taking its worldwide haul to more than $1.05 billion (around Rs 9,160 crore).

The film has been rewriting the record books since its debut, opening to $360 million (around Rs 3,132 crore) in North America and $932 million (around Rs 8,108 crore) globally last weekend. Those numbers marked the biggest domestic opening in box office history and the second-largest global debut of all time.

Brand New Day also delivered the highest preview collections ever with $72 million (around Rs 626 crore), the highest opening day with $169.8 million (around Rs 1,477 crore) and the highest-grossing Monday in history, earning $47 million (around Rs 409 crore) to surpass the previous record of $40 million (around Rs 348 crore) set by Black Panther in 2018.

The remarkable performance has fuelled expectations that the film could soon cross $2 billion (around Rs 17,400 crore) worldwide, a feat achieved by only seven films so far and finish among the highest-grossing releases of all time.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige admitted he never expected Avengers: Endgame’s domestic opening record to fall, calling the latest achievement overwhelming and saying the success bodes well for the studio’s upcoming slate, including Avengers: Doomsday, which reunites several Marvel heroes while introducing Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become the fourth film of 2026 to enter the billion-dollar club after The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($1.001 billion or around Rs 8,709 crore), Michael ($1.001 billion) and Toy Story 5 ($1.067 billion or around Rs 9,283 crore). Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has already collected $912 million (around Rs 7,934 crore) and is poised to become the year’s fifth billion-dollar blockbuster.

The surge is helping Hollywood edge closer to its strongest post-pandemic recovery. With $3.579 billion (around Rs 31,137 crore) already generated during the summer season, the industry is eyeing $4 billion (around Rs 34,800 crore) in domestic summer ticket sales and hopes overall North American box office revenue will surpass $10 billion (around Rs 87,000 crore) in 2026 for the first time since 2019.
