Paramount-Warner merger challenge goes to trial in March 2027

Los Angeles: A legal challenge to Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery will go to trial in March 2027, a federal judge in California has ruled, according to a Reuters report.

The decision marks a procedural win for California Attorney General’s Office, which had sought an earlier trial beginning in April. Paramount, meanwhile, had requested that proceedings start in November.

Under an agreement cited by Reuters, Paramount has committed not to complete the transaction until the court issues a ruling or until June 2027, whichever comes first.

The trial is expected to last 12 days and will examine claims brought by a coalition of states led by California, along with the Writers Guild of America.

The states argue that the merger would reduce competition in the distribution of film and television content, while the Writers Guild contends that the combined company would weaken competition for screenwriting work and opportunities for writers.

Paramount has rejected those arguments, maintaining that the acquisition would strengthen Hollywood by increasing content production and creating a more competitive media business.

According to Reuters, the timing of the trial could also have financial implications. Paramount may be required to pay as much as $1.7 billion in ticking fees promised to Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders if completion of the transaction is pushed back until next summer.

The March 2027 trial sets the stage for what could become one of Hollywood’s most closely watched courtroom battles, with the future of one of the industry’s biggest proposed media mergers now resting in the hands of a federal judge.
