MUMBAI: Trust is the best passport in medical tourism, and one Indian startup has just added another stamp. CureMeAbroad has become a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), joining the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative as it seeks to strengthen governance, transparency and accountability in the medical tourism sector.

The company said it is among the first Indian health-tech startups, and the first Indian healthcare startup according to its statement, to enrol in the UNGC, which brings together more than 20,000 companies across over 160 countries committed to responsible business practices.

By becoming a signatory, CureMeAbroad has committed to aligning its operations with the UN Global Compact’s ten principles covering human rights, labour standards, environmental responsibility and anti-corruption. The company will also publish an annual Communication on Progress (CoP) detailing the steps it has taken to implement these commitments.

The move comes as the startup looks to position governance and compliance as core elements of its business model rather than later-stage corporate initiatives. The company said it achieved cashflow positivity within its first two quarters and believes long-term growth in medical tourism depends on building trust with patients, hospitals and investors alike.

Commenting on the milestone, CureMeAbroad chief executive officer and co-founder Aditya Oza said global accountability standards are particularly important in healthcare.

“We are handling some of the most personal decisions people make, their health and safety in a foreign country. The UNGC framework gives us a globally recognised standard to hold ourselves to, not just internally, but publicly. For a startup in medical tourism, where patient trust is everything, that kind of accountability is not a nice-to-have. It is the foundation,” Oza said.

The company also plans to align its internal policies with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).

Speaking about the development, CureMeAbroad co-founder and chief marketing officer Mikhail Bohra said international recognition of governance standards helps reinforce confidence among stakeholders.

“International patients are trusting us with decisions that affect their lives. Hospital partners are trusting us to send them credible, well-prepared patients. Investors are trusting us to build something durable. The UNGC participation communicates, in a language that all of those stakeholders understand globally, that we are serious about how we operate, not just how fast we grow,” Bohra said.

The UNGC enrolment forms part of a broader compliance roadmap for the company. CureMeAbroad said it is already HIPAA-compliant for handling patient data from the United States, is completing GDPR compliance for European users and has applied for Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) as it expands its international operations.

Founded as a medical tourism discovery and concierge platform, CureMeAbroad connects patients from markets including the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia with accredited hospitals around the world, managing treatment journeys from hospital selection through to care coordination.

As cross-border healthcare continues to grow, governance and regulatory compliance are becoming increasingly important differentiators. By signing the UN Global Compact, CureMeAbroad is seeking to demonstrate that credibility in medical tourism is built not only on clinical partnerships, but also on transparent and globally recognised business practices.
