TRAI picks BSNL’s Harinder Kumar as its new secretary
A senior telecom service officer moves from Maharashtra’s BSNL circle to one of the regulator’s key administrative posts
NEW DELHI: India’s telecom regulator has gone to the state-owned operator to fill its top administrative role. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has appointed Harinder Kumar, currently chief general manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s Maharashtra circle, as its new secretary on deputation under foreign service terms. The appointment, confirmed in an official TRAI letter dated June 10th, is for an initial period of two years.
Kumar is an Indian Telecom Service officer. His move to the regulator places a senior BSNL hand at the centre of an organisation that has lately had its plate full.
TRAI is currently examining the regulation of internet-based television services, a proposal that has drawn pointed responses from OTT platforms and broadcasters. The regulator is also reviewing complaints from telecom operators about spam and unsolicited communications on OTT messaging platforms. Kumar steps into the secretary’s role as both debates remain unresolved.
One man moves from running a state telecom circle to the desk where the rules get written. In India’s telecoms, that is rarely a quiet posting.
