PhonePe launches AI tool to help merchants build payment pages
MUMBAI: From a few words to a full checkout page, PhonePe is betting that the next storefront might begin with a prompt rather than a programmer. Digital payments platform PhonePe has launched SmartPages, an artificial intelligence-powered tool that enables merchants to create customised payment pages using simple text prompts, as fintech firms increasingly turn to AI to simplify online commerce.
Integrated directly into the PhonePe Payment Gateway (PG) dashboard, the new feature allows businesses to generate mobile-friendly payment pages without coding expertise, design skills or manual configuration.
The premise is straightforward: describe a product or service in a few sentences and let AI do the heavy lifting.
According to PhonePe, merchants can enter prompts in English or regional languages, and SmartPages will automatically generate a structured checkout page. The system can draft product descriptions, identify the customer information required for transactions—such as contact details, addresses or shipping information and organise the page layout based on the merchant’s needs.
The launch addresses a long-standing hurdle for small businesses, freelancers and independent sellers who often lack the resources to build professional digital storefronts. While no-code website builders have lowered barriers in recent years, they still require users to manually create content, design layouts and configure payment workflows.
SmartPages aims to compress that process into a matter of minutes.
“Merchants often spend hours, and sometimes weeks, creating a digital payment presence,” said PhonePe vice president and head of payments Deep Agrawal. He noted that the AI-powered tool is designed to significantly reduce setup time by automating both content generation and page creation.
Because the feature sits within the PhonePe PG ecosystem, merchants can immediately access payment processing capabilities, multiple payment methods and transaction analytics without requiring additional integrations.
The launch reflects a broader shift across the fintech sector, where generative AI is increasingly being embedded into merchant-facing products. Rather than focusing solely on customer service chatbots or productivity tools, companies are now using AI to automate core business functions traditionally requiring technical expertise.
PhonePe’s ambitions for SmartPages extend beyond page creation. The company said future versions could analyse a merchant’s social media activity, branding assets and previous marketing campaigns to generate more personalised payment experiences aligned with a business’s identity.
Such enhancements could further streamline digital onboarding while helping merchants create richer customer journeys without investing heavily in web development or design resources.
As AI steadily moves from back-office experimentation to front-line business tools, SmartPages highlights a growing trend: for many merchants, building an online storefront may soon be as simple as describing what they sell.
