TRAI extends deadline for ALTD, FAST services consultation feedback
Stakeholders get more time to review regulatory framework for streaming TV
NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has extended the deadline for submitting comments on its consultation paper on Application-based Linear Television Distribution (ALTD) services, including Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) platforms.
As per an update issued by the Press Information Bureau, the last date for written comments has been moved from May 4 to May 11, 2026, while counter-comments can now be submitted until May 25, 2026, instead of the earlier May 18 deadline.
The consultation paper, released on April 6, 2026, aims to create a regulatory framework for the rapidly evolving segment of app-based linear TV and ad-supported streaming services, which are gaining traction among Indian viewers.
The extension comes after multiple requests from stakeholders, who pointed out that the subject involves complex technical, operational and regulatory considerations, requiring deeper analysis, including global benchmarks and best practices.
TRAI has clarified that no further extensions will be granted, indicating that the consultation process is expected to move forward within the revised timeline.
Stakeholders have been advised to submit their responses electronically via the designated email IDs. For further clarification, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India advisor (B&CS) Deepali Sharma may be contacted.
The move is part of TRAI’s broader effort to bring structure and clarity to India’s fast-growing digital television ecosystem, as viewing habits continue to shift towards streaming and app-based platforms.
