Department of Posts expands banking access with 887 ATMs
NEW DELHI: India’s Department of Posts has overhauled its ATM network, activating 887 machines across the country in a fresh push to bring basic banking closer to citizens’ homes.
The rollout, announced on January 20, is designed to make everyday financial services more accessible and user-friendly, particularly for people in rural and underserved areas. Installed at post offices nationwide, the new ATMs allow customers to withdraw cash, check account balances and carry out other essential banking transactions without travelling long distances.
The move aligns with the government’s broader push for financial inclusion through digital transformation, using India Post’s vast physical footprint to bridge gaps in last-mile banking access.
By embedding ATMs within neighbourhood post offices, the department is positioning India Post as a more active player in everyday retail banking, especially in regions where commercial bank branches remain thin on the ground.
Citizens have been encouraged to make use of the ATM services available at post offices across the country.
For India Post, the message is clear: the humble post office is no longer just about letters and parcels. It is fast becoming a frontline bank branch for the rest of India.
