‘Anchorman’. ‘Mean Girls’ top MTV Movie Awards nominees list
MUMBAI: Quiet on the set! Action! MTV US has announced the list of nominees for the 2005 MTV Movie Awards.
The comedies Anchorman and Mean Girls have topped the list with four nominations each.
The 14th edition of the show will feature two new categories – Best Frightened Performance and Best Video Game Based On A Movie. The show takes place on 4 June at the Sghrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The star of the new movie Fever Pitch Jimmy Fallon will host the star-studded awards show.
What is interesting is that neither Anchorman nor Mean Girls have been nominated for best film. The nominees in this category are Quentin Tarantino’s martial arts fest Kill Bill Vol. 2,
Napoleon Dynamite, Spider-Man 2, Ray and The Incredibles which won an Oscar earlier this year in the animation categry.
In the acting categories Jamie Foxx is the favourite to win for playing the lead in Ray. While The Aviator surprisingly failed to get a Best Picture nomination its star Leonardo Di Caprio has been nominated. Similarly in the Best Actress category Hilary Swank who won an Oscar for playing a female boxer in Million Dollar Baby has been nominated while the film has been snubbed in the best movie category. Swank’s competition includes Mean Girls’ Lindsay Lohan and Uma Thurman who mesmerised as The Bride in Kill Bill Volume 2.
MTV Networks Group, Logo and MTV Films president Van Toffler said, “The MTV Movie Awards celebrate all the films, stars, and memorable moments from the past year from Mean Girls to Will Ferrell to Napoleon Dynamite’s dance scene — everything that our audience looks for in a great movie. The introduction of two new categories this year clearly demonstrates that this show constantly evolves to address our audiences’ tastes.”
The nominees were chosen through a US poll of MTV and MTV2 viewers. The winners will be determined by MTV and MTV2 viewers, and only Virgin Mobile USA customers can cast their vote wirelessly through “*MTV” found under “VirginXtras” or “VirginXL” for 3G-enabled phones. In addition, votes can be cast till 30 May online by visiting MTV.com or by telephone. Tickets for the event are being sold.
The Best Frightened Performance will award the actor who consistently over the course of the film gave the most convincingly frightened performance. Additionally, MTV will pay tribute to all the great video games where movies were the inspiration for the game with Best Video Game Based on a Movie. This award will be announced in the Pre-Show and viewers will be able to vote for this category by dialing *MTV on their Virgin Mobile phone.
