China closes several hundred porn websites

MUMBAI: In what is being seen as a positive move in China’s fight against online porn peddlers Chinese public security authorities have shut-down 598 porn web sites, and eradicated 35 porn domain names, from September till November 2005.
Media reports indicate that China has the world’s second-largest population of Internet users after the US, with more than 100 million people online.
China’s communist government encourages the usage of the net for education and business but has launched repeated campaigns to get rid of obscene content.
China has also targeted online activities that it views as being subversive like violent games, spam, fraud, gambling.
