Apsara Awards nominations out

MUMBAI: The nominations of the 6th Chevrolet Apsara Film & Television Producers Guild Awards are out.


Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan leads the list with 13 nominations, followed by the Salman Khan-starrer Dabangg that is named in 10 categories.


Other nominations in the best film category are Raajneeti, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Band Baaja Baaraat and Ishqiya.


My Name Is Khan has been nominated in the best story category for Shibani Bathija; best lyrics for Niranjan Iyengar for ‘Tere naina’ while Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan has got the best male singer nomination for the same number; best music for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy; best female singer for Richa Sharma for Sajda; best director for Karan Johar; best female actress for Kajol; best editing for Deepa Bhatia; best cinematography Ravi K. Chandran; best sound recording Dileep Subramaniam; and best special effects for Red Chilles VFX.


Arbaaz Khan-produced Dabangg has also been nominated for best dialogue for Abhinav Kashyap and Dilip Shukla; best choreography for Farah Khan for Munni Badnam, while Mamta Sharma has also annexed the best female singer nomination for the same song. The film has also been nominated for best lyrics for Faiz Anwar for the song Tere mast mast do nain for which Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has got the best male singer nomination and also for best music for Sajid-Wajid. Sonu Sood too has got a nomination best actor in a negative role category. The action filled funny cop drama has also been nominated for the best special effects for Alagar Swamy.


For the best actor trophy, there is a keen tussle between Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Other actors competing for the same category are Ajay Devgn for Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Hrithik Roshan for Guzaarish and Ranbir Kapoor for Raajneeti.


Newcomer Anushka Sharma is competing with Kajol in best actress category for her role in Band Baaja Baaraat, Kareena Kapoor for Golmaal 3, Vidya Balan for Ishqiya and Aishwarya Rai for Guzaarish.


The nominations for best director include Prakash Jha for Raajneeti, Milan Luthria for Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Dibakar Banerjee for Love Sex Aur Dhoka and Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Guzaarish.


In the best female singer category, Sunidhi Chauhan has got two nominations for ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani (Tees Maar Khan) and Ainvayi Ainvayi (Band Baaja Baaraat). Others vying for best singer trophy are Tulsi Kumar for Tum jo aaye (Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai) and Sona Mahapatra and Shreya Ghoshal for Bahara (I Hate Luv Storys).


Said Film & Television Producers Guild of India president Ramesh Sippy in a statement, “The Indian film industry has had a thrilling past year with the likes of both small and big budget films reigning equally at the box office. It is very thrilling to watch varied movies like Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Dabaang, Peepli Live, My Name is Khan, Love Sex Aur Dhoka, Golmaal 3, Ishqiya, Guzaarish and Tere Bin Laden. All these films have done very well and I anticipate that the producers would have a tough time deciding a winner. Bollywood‘s golden era has arrived.”


Small-budget movies like Peepli Live, Well Done Abba and Love Sex Aur Dhoka have also won nominations in various categories.

Zee5 and Applause Entertainment team up for whodunnit ‘Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa’

Rajat Kapoor directs star-studded murder mystery streaming from 10 April.

MUMBAI: Zee5 is serving up another killer collaboration and this time, the murder mystery comes with a generous side of dark humour and family dysfunction. The streaming platform has partnered with Applause Entertainment and Mithya Talkies to bring Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa, a fresh, twisted whodunnit written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker and actor Rajat Kapoor. The film will stream exclusively on Hindi Zee5 from 10 April.

The movie reimagines the classic murder mystery genre with a contemporary, darkly comic edge. It revolves around a group of friends and family who smile, drink, and celebrate together until the silence snaps and long-buried secrets spill out. The stellar ensemble cast includes Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, Waluscha De Sousa, Saurabh Shukla, Chandrachoor Rai, Neil Bhoopalam, Koel Purie, Palomi Ghosh, and Rajat Kapoor himself.

This latest offering continues the successful partnership between Zee5 and Applause Entertainment, which has previously delivered diverse hits such as Mithya, Bloody Brothers, and Jab Khuli Kitaab.

Applause Entertainment business head for movies Sunil Chainani added, “This film adds yet another compelling layer to our slate with Rajat Kapoor’s unmistakable voice.”

Rajat Kapoor shared, “What interested me was not just the mechanics of a whodunnit, but the emotional violence that precedes physical violence. These are people who smile at each other, but there’s so much that is not said.”

The film promises razor-sharp writing, layered performances, and simmering tension, inviting viewers not just to solve the crime but to unravel the complex relationships at its heart.
