Durban Fest to have special focus on India

The 32nd Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) that will run from 21 to 31 July will have a special focus on ‘India Independents’.


The festival will present over 200 screenings at venues across the Durban district.


“The remarkably diverse cinema of India is celebrated at DIFF this year, with a focus on both the classic and the daringly contemporary,” reads the official website of the festival.


 
As part of the special focus, the festival will present a Satyajit Ray Retrospective along with new works by fresh Indian talents. The six films of Ray that would be screened are Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Charulata, Kapurush, Ghare Baire and Ray’s final film, Agantuk.


Leena Manimekelai’s film The Dead Sea will have its World Premiere at the festival. Onir’s I Am, Sanjoy Nag’s Memories In March, Kaushik Mukherjee’s Bengali film Gandu and Aamir Bashir’s Autumn will also be screened. “


Bollywood – The Greatest Love Story Ever Told, a documentary directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Jeff Zimbalist will be presented in the Documentary section of the festival.


There will also be an exhibition of artworks by Ranjit Dahiya of India titled ‘History of Bollywood Cinema’, in association with Alliance Française as part of the Indian focus.

MUMBAI: Bollywood’s popularity contest has a new weekly scorecard, and the numbers are telling. IMDb’s Popular Indian Celebrities list for this week places Shanaya Kapoor at number six, buoyed by buzz around her film Tu Yaa Main. Naila Grrewal slots in at seven on the back of the returning comedy series Maamla Legal Hai, while Rashmika Mandanna climbs to eighth, riding mounting anticipation for Cocktail 2.

The list, available exclusively on the IMDb app for Android and iOS, tracks trending Indian entertainers and filmmakers each week, drawing on data from more than 200m monthly visits to the platform worldwide.

Further down the rankings, Raaka is keeping two of its biggest names in the spotlight. Deepika Padukone holds 11th position, with Allu Arjun close behind at 13th, as the film continues to find traction with audiences.

The list offers fans a weekly pulse on who is breaking through, who is holding steady, and who is fading. It is a barometer as unsparing as the box office itself.
