Fox’a Rio release grosses Rs 28 mn in opening weekend
MUMBAI:Fox Star Studios‘ 3D film Rio has grossed Rs 28 million in its opening weekend in India.
Dubbed in Hindi with voiceovers by Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak, the Carlos Saldana directed film has got the second biggest opening of 2011 for any Hollywood film.
Featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway and Jamie Foxx, the film has garnered the number one opening for any Hollywood animation film over powering records of such films like Ice Age 3, Toy Story 3 and Shrek 4.
Said Fox Star Studios India CEO Vijay Singh, “We are delighted by the consistently positive response to Rio all across the country. The film
has generated a strong word of mouth and is exciting audiences of all ages. It‘s great to see Indian audiences warm up to animation films.”
Internationally, Rio set the foreign bo -office on fire with an estimated $55 million intake across 72 countries with handsome collections in Brazil, Russia and Mexico.
The film opens in the US and Canada on 15 April and also in 19 other foreign markets including France, Belgium and Italy.

MUMBAI: Bollywood’s popularity contest has a new weekly scorecard, and the numbers are telling. IMDb’s Popular Indian Celebrities list for this week places Shanaya Kapoor at number six, buoyed by buzz around her film Tu Yaa Main. Naila Grrewal slots in at seven on the back of the returning comedy series Maamla Legal Hai, while Rashmika Mandanna climbs to eighth, riding mounting anticipation for Cocktail 2.
The list, available exclusively on the IMDb app for Android and iOS, tracks trending Indian entertainers and filmmakers each week, drawing on data from more than 200m monthly visits to the platform worldwide.
Further down the rankings, Raaka is keeping two of its biggest names in the spotlight. Deepika Padukone holds 11th position, with Allu Arjun close behind at 13th, as the film continues to find traction with audiences.
The list offers fans a weekly pulse on who is breaking through, who is holding steady, and who is fading. It is a barometer as unsparing as the box office itself.
