Film on social injustice to screen at Cannes Short Film Corner
MUMBAI: Ad filmmaker Puneet Prakash‘s 22-minute short film, Mombatti, has been selected to be screened at the Cannes Short Film Corner 2011.
The film is the story of Pintu, a 10-year-old boy from a remote village in India who is not able to take the social rejection of his family after his father sacrifices his life for the country.
He is left with inner rage after he learns that his father will not get the celebration and respect that he deserves for sacrificing his life for the country. What does Pintu do forms the crux of the story.
Prakash got the idea of the film after reading a full page coverage of the soldiers who died in the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008 in a newspaper. In the same newspaper, it was reported about an officer who died fighting the naxals.
Avers Prakash, ” It is strange but in our country martyrs who are the helm of a popular setting get more respect and admiration compared to those who die on the borders of some unknown location.”
In Mombatti, the director highlights the problems faced by families of the unknown martyrs. Besides, the film also highlights the lack of education and sanitation facilities in villages.
