BroadcastAsia2006 to focus on the digital era
MUMBAI: BroadcastAsia 2006, which takes place from 20 to 23 June 2006 in Singapore has revealed a new theme.
The theme is Digital: The Journey Forward. This embodies BroadcastAsia’s positioning to embrace the digital revolution and constantly ‘go forward’ by staying relevant to the industry, while its subtitle The 11th International Digital Multimedia & Entertainment Technology and Conference”, has also been updated to reflect the show’s progress.
These changes are more than just aesthetic. As Singapore Exhibition Services (SES) project director Jackson Yeoh says, “BroadcastAsia is paving a road where there’s something for everyone. If exhibitors and visitors wish to blaze trails by speeding up, they can, and if they are driving the digital transition at a slower pace, they can do so too. The key here is that ultimately, everyone is moving forward, and everyone has the same thing in mind, reaching that digital destination”.
With the opening of companies such as Lucasfilm, Electronic Arts’ (EA) studio and a commitment of $1 billion over the next 10 years by the Economic Development Board (EDB) to develop the digital media industry here, BroadcastAsia’s focus on ‘going digital’ could not be more timely. Singapore wants to develop its media industry to contribute three per cent GDP by 2012 and attract more digital media players to set up base in Singapore.
”Such news underscores the importance of having shows like BroadcastAsia. Being an all-encompassing event that includes computer graphics and animation, professional audio and cable and satellite, the entire industry value chain is addressed. Going forward, the show will continue to stay relevant and on-par with the industry demands and trends not just in Singapore, but in the entire region” adds Jackson.
The show will also include technology highlights that focus on the latest in internet protocol television (IPTV), broadcasting to handhelds, video on demand, personal video recording, digital audio broadcasting (Dab), tapeless technology, computer graphics and animation, and high-definition (HD) technology. These highlights will be supplemented by a series of activities ranging from conference presentations demonstrations, tutorial classes and panel discussions.
BroadcastAsia2006, Digital: The Journey Forward is Asia’s 11th International Digital Multimedia & Entertainment Technology Exhibition & Conference. As the journey into the digital future continues, industry players at BroadcastAsia2006 will experience and engage with the latest in digital multimedia technologies, covering all aspects from content creation, management through to delivery.
As in the past BroadcastAsia2006 will be held concurrently with CommunicAsia2006 and EnterpriseIT2006 from 20-23 June 2006 at the Singapore Expo.
The BroadcastAsia2006 International Conference from 19 to 22 June 2006 will cover the latest topics and trends in digital multimedia technologies and broadcasting, providing industry players with solid platform for the digital journey ahead.
Last year BroadcastAsia featured over 700 exhibiting companies from 41 countries/regions and attracted over 13,000 attendees. The show also hosted over 750 conference speakers and delegates from 38 countries/regions.

Hamdard honours changemakers at Abdul Hameed awards
NEW DELHI: Hamdard Laboratories gathered a cross-section of India’s achievers in New Delhi on Friday, handing out the Hakeem Abdul Hameed Excellence Awards to figures who have left their mark across healthcare, education, sport, public service and the arts.
The ceremony, attended by minister of state for defence Sanjay Seth and senior officials from the ministry of Ayush, celebrated individuals whose work blends professional success with a sense of public purpose. It was as much a roll call of achievement as it was a reminder that influence is not measured only in profits or podiums, but in people reached and lives improved.
Among the headline awardees was Alakh Pandey, founder and chief executive of PhysicsWallah, recognised for turning affordable digital learning into a mass movement. On the sporting front, Arjuna Awardee and kabaddi player Sakshi Puniya was honoured for her contribution to the game and for pushing women’s participation onto bigger stages.
The cultural spotlight fell on veteran lyricist and poet Santosh Anand, whose songs have echoed across generations of Hindi cinema. At 97, Anand accepted the honour with characteristic humility, reflecting on a life shaped by perseverance and hope.
Healthcare honours spanned both modern and traditional systems. Manoj N. Nesari was recognised for strengthening Ayurveda’s place in national and global health frameworks. Padma shri Mohammed Abdul Waheed was honoured for his research-backed work in Unani medicine, while padma shri Mohsin Wali received recognition for his long-standing contribution to patient-centred care.
Education and social development also featured prominently. Padma shri Zahir Ishaq Kazi was honoured for decades of work in education, while former Meghalaya superintendent of Police T. C. Chacko was recognised for public service. Goonj founder Anshu Gupta received an award for his dignity-centred rural development initiatives, and the Hunar Shakti Foundation was honoured for empowering women and young girls through skill development.
The Lifetime Achievement Award went to former IAS officer Shailaja Chandra for her long career in public healthcare and governance, particularly in the traditional systems under Ayush.
Speaking at the event, Hamdard chairman Abdul Majeed said the awards were a tribute to those who combine excellence with empathy. “These awardees reflect Hakeem Sahib’s belief that healthcare, education and public service must ultimately serve humanity,” he said.
Minister Seth struck a forward-looking note, saying India’s young population gives the country a unique opportunity to become a global destination for learning, health and wellness by 2047.
The ceremony also featured the trailer launch of Unani Ki Kahaani, an upcoming documentary starring actor Jim Sarbh, set to premiere on Discovery on 11 February.
Instituted in memory of Unani scholar and educationist Hakeem Abdul Hameed, the awards have grown into a national platform that celebrates those building a more inclusive and resilient India. For one evening at least, the spotlight was not just on success, but on service with substance.
