US advocacy group lashes out at Disney working conditions in China

MUMBAI: The National Labour Committee (NLC), an anti-sweatshop advocacy group in the US, has made charges against Disney.

The NLC released a videotape alleging that two Chinese factories making books for Disney operate under unsafe conditions.

The NLC alleges that in China, young women and men are forced to work 10 to 13 hours a day producing Disney’s children’s books six and seven days a week at wages as low as 33 to 41 cents an hour.

The NLC says it will launch an international campaign in association with its NGO partners in Hong Kong against the company.

Responding to the allegations, Disney said in a statement that it had contacted Verite, a non-profit social auditing and training firm, to conduct an investigation of the claims.
