Trai receives ISO 9001:2000 certificate

MUMBAI: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has obtained the quality management system certificate license under ISO 9001:2000 from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a national standard certification body of India, with effect from 1 December, 2004.

An official release says Trai is one of the first few regulatory bodies in the world to obtain the quality management certificate license under ISO 9001:2000. The license issued is operative for a period of 3 years during which period, BIS will be conducting surveillance audit to ensure continued improvement in the system and procedures.

Understanding the need to streamline its existing procedures and systematise its functions, Trai, in September 2003, had engaged RITES Limited (a Government of India enterprise) as a consultant to establish and reinforce an institutionalised system for quality in various operations of the organization. Apart from ensuring a systematic environment for management of processes, consistency in working, measurability of performance, customer focus and increased customer satisfaction, the quality management system will improve efficiency and effectiveness besides focusing on continual improvement and proactive approach. The system established in 2004 was put to auditing both by internally trained auditors as well as auditors of RITES Limited.

After satisfying that the quality management system is fully functional, BIS, had audited and certified the quality management system to be in conformity with the standards of ISO 9001:2000. The license issued is operative for a period of 3 years during which period, BIS will be conducting surveillance audit to ensure continued improvement in the system and procedures, the release adds.
