While entertainment channels find it difficult to look beyond "saas-bahu" conflicts, national broadcaster Doordarshan soldiers on covering social responsibility issues.

Launching 25 March on DD1 is a new series Bulandi. The series, produced by the National Literacy Mission and directed by Satyan Kappu, will be telecast on Mondays & Thursdays at 3 pm.

The story revolves around Mushtaq Rizvi, a carpet weaver who has come up the hard way and by sheer dint of hard work manages to get his own import export business going. The contrast is brought out of the protagonist's father, though extremely skilled, is exploited and barely makes ends meet because he is illiterate.
