Overall
changes in viewer tastes since the DD days
Being
a nation evolving at a fanatical pace, change
in all spheres and outlooks is obvious, necessary
and healthy. Of course, television viewers'
tastes have undergone changes, too... but these
can't be seen in isolation. We also have to
see that entertainment options with malls, coffee
shops, multiplexes, foreign channels, etc are
exploding - specially for the younger generation...
even in smaller towns
Also, the viewers have become more demanding
and very particular about the kind of entertainment
that is preferred. This is a result of the variety
of choice that is available today. Also, with
viewer interactivity playing a pivotal role
in deciding the kind of program that goes on
air, the control is wielded by the evolving
viewer.
Have we evolved or
are we getting regressive with the sindoor-n-saga
tales
Neither of the two viewpoints is absolute...
while there have been numerous shows which have
favourably depicted regressive thoughts... these
very shows have, at times, also furthered bold
and welcome mindsets. However,
recently, there has also been the welcome breakaway
trend with successful shows like Kareena Kareena
projecting young, unmarried, working, positive
heroines who rely on their brains more than
their husbands... and this is a trend that's
hopefully only going to further catch steam
in the coming months and years.

Zee
has and will continue to innovate with
shows - some innovations we tried last
year - like India's Best - reality
talent hunt... and Kareena Kareena
- a first again, revolving pulling
off a series where the central protagonist,
unlike our regular heroines, is a liar...
have both been great successes for us.
The next one to watch out for is Business
Baazigar... the newer, bigger second
season of India's best... a unique
thriller... new dramas, and much more.

Favourite
shows; personal likes and dislikes
Kareena Kareena, Astitva, Tumhari Disha and
Seinfeld.
Trends in the
coming years
India is too volatile a market to easily predict
any definite trend, but one might just see a
trend of gradually moving away from soaps...
Into what...? That's up for all of us to explore...
and as long as we are up to exploring and experimenting,
I guess we'll come across it. I believe reality
will continue being a favourite along with comedy
and drama.
On Viewer Interactivity
We have been pleasantly surprised at the response
we receive via interactive tools like SMS and
letters. Our contests receive tremendous response.
In fact our show Kahiye Toh... is all
about getting to know the viewer's opinion on
a particular show and gauging its popularity.
Most
recently, for instance, we had asked viewers
to send in their experiences regarding the super-natural
so that we could create episodes based on that.
The response has been so overwhelming that not
only have we slotted the entire month of March
based on viewer experiences, but have also lined
up more in the pipeline.
The Astitva awards is another such example where
we have nomination letters coming from all the
corners of the country.
