MUMBAI:
The average cricket-loving Indian wants Sourav Ganguly back at the
helm. Back to where he was exactly two years ago. In an opinion
poll conducted by NDTV across the four metros- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata
and Chennai- and a viewers' poll on its website and via SMS, 58.7%
of the respondents said Sourav Ganguly should once again be made
Captain of the Indian cricket team, both for Tests and One Day Internationals.
Only 20.3% felt master blaster Sachin Tendulkar should succeed Rahul
Dravid, while 21% said wicket keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni should
be given the additional responsibility of leading the team. The
poll covered over 30,000 respondents.
The
opinion poll also asked if there should be separate captains for
Tests and one-day internationals. Again the clear choice for the
ODI Captain was the 'Prince of Kolkata', who got 49.3% of the votes;
27.9% were in favour of Sachin Tendulkar, and 22.8% felt MS Dhoni
was cut out for the job.
For
Tests too, Ganguly was the popular choice for Captain, with 48.4%
of the respondents batting for him while 30.4% said Sachin was the
right person and 21.2% felt Dhoni could do the job best.
Fieldwork
for the opinion poll was carried out by Gfk-MODE between 15 Sept
2007 and 17 Sept 2007.
