MUMBAI:
Shemaroo Entertainment releases 'Beyond the Sea' - a refreshingly
off-beat biopic of singer Bobby Darin. This real life drama stars
Kevin Spacey as Darin and also stars Kate Bosworth, John Goodman,
Bob Hoskins, Brenda Blethyn, Greta Scacchi - all of whom who have
been nominated and won umpteen prestigious awards. It is interesting
to note that, Spacey produced, directed and did all of his own singing
and dancing in the film.
Based
on the life of singer Bobby Darin, Beyond the Sea charts
his ascent from 50s bubblegum pop to his tuxedo-clad heyday in the
60s and hippy rebirth in the 70s. Spacey creates a vibrant and whimsical
portrait with musical set-pieces. The film shows how one of America's
greatest performers, Bobby Darin, lived a rags-to riches life.
Beyond
the Sea was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival,
was nominated for the Golden Globes (Best Performance by an actor
in a motion picture - Kevin Spacey) and was also nominated for the
Grammy Awards (Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for motion picture,
television or other visual media).
Kevin
Spacey's biggest hope was that the film would reintroduce Bobby
Darin's music to a whole new generation of fans. He went on to note
that shortly after the film's release, sales of Darin's music went
up over 150 per cent. Spacey got wonderful reviews for his dazzling
performance in Beyond the Sea from BBC, Guardian/ Observer
and New York Post among others.
