MUMBAI:
SAMVAAD VIDEO has over the past two decades created its own unique
identity in the world of television. The reason being that Samvaad
has always been conscious of its social commitments while delivering

The serials have been a cross section of all existing genres from
sitcoms like 'Bante Bigadte' to serials like 'Chunauti' which was
an exposé on rampant corruption in the world of education.
Keeping in mind the obligation to society Rakesh Chowdhary the renowned
maker of the television industry and the man behind Samvaad Video
presented successful serials like Bante Bigadte, Chunauti, Virasat,
Aashiana, Baazaar and Shikwah, which besides entertaining the audiences
placed burning issues before the masses through the medium of television.
At
present 'Hari Mirchi Lal Mirchi' a sitcom made by Rakesh Chowdhary
is being telecast every Thursday night at 9 p.m. on Doordarshan's
national network. This serial has been adjudged as being the serial
with maximum nation-wide viewerships.
Samvaad
video's relationships with classical literature go back a long way.
Till date Samvaad has presented successful adaptations of literary
classics like Mujrim Haazir, Intezaar Aur Sahi and Kahani Junction.
And now Samvaad brings to you 'Sanyasi' produced and directed by
the renowned maker Rakesh Chowdhary. The serial is to be telecast
on Doordarshan's national network from 21st of may every Monday
night at 9.30 p.m. and so from the 21st of may Samvaad video will
have two programmes on air in prime time slots on Doordarshan's
national network.
The
serial Sanyasi is based on a classical work of the same name by
the renowned Littérateur Pandit Ilachandra Joshi. This was
the most popular literary work of its period and even today there
is no dearth of people who wish to read this novel. The novel is
a collector's item with any connoisseur of literature. It has become
a tradition that every lover of literature must essentially have
a copy of Sanyasi as a part of his personal collection.
The
novel Sanyasi is basically a love story. The male protagonist of
this story marries twice in life. Both his wives love him immensely.
But though our protagonist has a good and a gentle nature he is
absolutely self centric. Finally our protagonist decides to head
towards renunciation. Even here his renunciation ends up being just
an empty delusion.
Referring
to Sanyasi as a unique novel with a universal appeal Rakesh Chowdhary
tells us. - "This novel explores human relationships and the
relations between a man and a woman not only in the sense of the
Indian male but the universal male whose mindset is set upon monogamous
relations, and his human frailties. Every man desires that his woman
should submit herself entirely to his will. The man wishes that
the woman should perpetually strive for his happiness and pleasure
and this has been desired by man from times immemorial. This craving
existed thousands of years ago, it exists today, and shall exist
five hundred years in the future. However much a man may study and
acquire knowledge or engross himself in high philosophy... his basic
nature and mindset shall always remain unchanged. And this very
mindset and emotions of the man is the primary emotion of the serial
Sanyasi. For this very reason the novel shall always hold a universal
appeal. The second basis of this novel is that no matter how much
a woman strives for the man she loves, the man in essence shall
never be satisfied. Examples of such men abound in our scriptures
and religious epics. And such men exist even in the present day.
Sita had surrendered her entire existence for Ram and yet she had
to go through the Agni-Pariksha. Now the question remains... how
long will a woman accept this suffering. Is there a limit to her
endurance? And what will happen when the limit of endurance is breached.
All this forms the basis of the story."
To
create a serial or a film on a literary classic is truly a difficult
task. The maker Rakesh Chowdhary has given great attention to the
adapting the narrative and transforming it into visual imagery while
keeping the soul of the original work unblemished. He tells us -
"In order to bring the novel onto the screen with its original
flavour intact we filmed the serial on actual locations. Hence we
managed to capture the very essence of the region where the story
has been originally visualised. Besides Mumbai we have gone to Panchmardhi,
Varanasi, and Allahabad to shoot the serial. For some scenes we
had to create expensive sets. The period of the novel is the forties
and fifties. To recreate this period and bring it to life on screen
was a difficult task indeed. We worked alongwith experienced technicians
who had proved their capability beyond doubt to complete this daunting
task. We have given total prominence to the costumes and other items
as mentioned and described within the novel itself. We have maintained
the significance of the attire worn during the period and the national
award winning costume designer Mala De Banthiya has after detailed
research designed costumes for each character in the serial. Besides
this the highly acclaimed art director Ajit Patnaik has designed
the sets. The serial spans over a wide canvass. Starting from Varanasi
the story moves through Lucknow, Allahabad and other cities. From
our side we have been true to the locations, costumes, songs, music
and every aspect of the making and have not compromised in any way
in the making of this serial. This is the reason why the serial
went overbudget. This is truly a very expensive serial."
Made
under the banner of Samvaad video the serial Sanyasi is produced
and directed by Rakesh Chowdhary, writer Anupam Ghosh, camera Surya
Mishra, music direction Sapan Jagmohan, lyrics Nyaksh Lyallpuri,
art direction Ajit Patnaik, and costume design by Mala de Banthiya.
The actors who have enhanced the literary classic by their performances
are Vineet Raina, Surabhi Tiwari, Namrata Thapa, Ujjwala Rana, Prabha
Sinha, Vikrant Chaturvedi, Shahnawaz, Roma Williams, Amit Gupta,
Shivani Gosai and others.
