MUMBAI:
One of the most famous athletics meetings in the world will be shown
live on Ten Sports this week, with the broadcast of the legendary
Bislett event from Norway, part of the IAAF Golden League
Among
the highlights will be the 100 metres mens sprint where The reigning
European champion, Francis Obikwelu of Portugal, will run against
the worlds fastest man, Asafa Powell.
On
a night that traditionally threatens world record on what is by
reputation one of the fastest tracks in the athletics world, Meseret
Defar of Ethiopia could well have her eye on the record books. She
broke the world record on the womens 5000m in New York last
year with 14:24.53 and believes she can lower it further.
As
ever the Bislett meeting will end in the dream mile.
The mens race over one mile is one of the highlights of the athletics
year, and is where athletes such as Steve Ovett and Steve Cram both
broke the world record in the 1980s.
The
meeting is the first from the Golden League this season, with athletes
aiming for a share in the one million USD jackpot that is available
to anyone who wins his or her event in all 6 meetings. Last year
the jackpot was shared between three athletes, Asafa Powell in the
100 metres along with two Americans, the mens and womens champions
from the 400 metres, Jeremy Wariner and Sanya Richards.
The
other events are in Paris, Rome, Zurich, Brussels and the final
in Berlin. All the meetings will be shown live on Ten Sports in
the sub-continent.
