MUMBAI:
This Friday night, Star Movies presents an engaging and inspirational
sports film based on Santiago Munez, an illegal Mexican immigrant
living in Los Angeles. Like millions of kids around the world, he
harbors the dream of being a professional footballer. However, he
thinks it is only a dream. Until one day an extraordinary turn of
events makes him live his dream! Tune in to exclusive premiere of
'GOAL!' this Friday night, June 8th at 9 p.m. only on Star Movies.
Chronicling
a young boy's journey from poverty to international stardom, this
inspirational tale is directed by CSI creator Danny Cannon and stars
up-and-coming Latino actor Kuno Becker. When 10-year-old Santiago
Munez (Becker) crossed the Mexican border into America, he had two
things in his possession: his football and a tattered picture of
the World Cup. Growing up in Los Angeles, Santiago dreams of becoming
an international football star. But his father doesn't share his
vision. "There are two types of people in this world,"
declares the elder Munez, "People in big houses, and people
like us who cut their lawns and wash their cars. "When Santiago
is spotted at a local match by Brit scout Glen Foy (Stephen Dillane),
he gets a chance to play in the big league with Newcastle United.
However, muddy fields, cold winds and crunching blows from teammates
-- not to mention personal woes, injuries, and the temptations that
face all footballers these days -- are just a few of the obstacles
Santiago must overcome to reach his ultimate GOAL!
Set
against the backdrop of international football, GOAL!, features
cameos from some of the best-known names in the game, including
David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Raul and Newcastle captain Alan
Shearer.
Trivia
*Michael Winterbottom was originally signed to direct the film.
*AC/DC singer Brian Johnson, made a cameo appearance.
*The final scene where Santiago scores to win the game against Liverpool
F.C. is the actual goal scored by Laurent Robert in real life. It
is noticeable that Santiago, a right footed player throughout the
movie, shoots with his left foot in this scene.
*The role of main character Santiago was originally going to be
played by Diego Luna but he left to work on other projects. Kuno
Becker actually called Diego before he took the role to hear Diego's
reasons for not taking the role.
