INDIAN PM SAYS INTERNET & TELECOM POLICIES SOON

As last week ended, Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee announced that his government was going to get extremely active in laying the parameters that Internet service providers and telecom operators will have to operate in. Vajpayee said that an Internet policy is going to be rolled out in the next fortnight. Licences will also be issued to interested companies.

The former information and broadcasting minister Sushma Swaraj had earlier made a blanket announcement that cable operators can offer Internet services, without spelling out any norms. Hence the new Internet policy will have implications for the cable and satellite television industry.

Vajpayee added that his government was working a on telecom policy which will "meet the new challenges of convergence of telecom, information technology, media and consumer electronics."

The telecom policy, he said would be ready within the next three months and would hopefully resolve all outstanding issues in the telecom sector, following a study by a committee.
