MUMBAI: Natural clothing store Cottonworld, has discontinued the use of plastic bags and introduced cloth carry bags.

This way, around 200,000 plastic bags will be replaced by eco-friendly cloth bags. Bollywood actress, Konkona Sensharma launched the Cotton bag.

This gesture of promoting cotton bags as an alternative to plastic bags is two-pronged: while being environment friendly, it also stands up for the cause of child rights in India. Part proceeds from the bag will go to (Child Rights and You (Cry).

Cottonworld partner Lavin Lekhraj said, "We have called this initiative '2 causes in one bag.' For 20 years, Cottonworld has always stood for natural clothing. With global-warming taking on such alarming proportions, we thought about how a green brand such as ours could contribute. By using cloth bags, we are replacing nearly 200,000 plastic bags a year. This initiative is our contribution to the cause of ecology and the cause of child rights.

"We believe that the rights of each and every child to a happy childhood should be guaranteed. If each of us does our bit, we can leave our children a safer planet."

Cry regional director Irwin Fernandes says, "It's heartening to see Cottonworld coming forward to partner with CRY in our effort to work with children. We believe that children have the right to a safe and healthy environment, and small steps like using cloth bags go a long way in standing up for what is right."

The cotton bags will be made available at all Cottonworld stores across the country.
