International licensing event in Bangalore covers anti-piracy issues

BANGALORE: Licensing Brands International (LBI) held a two-day event in Bangalore called ‘Licensing in India’ with focus on various issues governing the segment.

The LII will be an annual event with the next edition planned at Mumbai, according to LBI’s Christine Annechino.

Increased TV viewership, channels, the growing number of malls and hypermarket, the internet explosion over the past decade have thrown open huge business potential for licensing of well known brands, icons, real and cartoon characters globally, and more so in India. Christine said that all the above components were in place in India for the licensing to thrive here, as well as the government's support of trademark protection, economic growth and personal income growth.

“This event is mostly for consumer goods, We have animated children’s characters here, we have lifestyle brands like Beverly Hills Polo Club, Global Brands and IMG, we have a lot of sports brands. IT’s all about bringing together people who have international brands and IP and putting them together with manufacturers, retailers and broadcasters, trying to seek a license on their products, which adds value to the products. We have some of the six top companies in licensing worldwide come to India to break ground, to try and see what the licensing opportunities are. Retailers like Pyramid, Spencer’s, Lifestyle, Pantaloons have come here because they want to see if the licenses are available,” informed Christine.

Many well known global companies participated. Notable among the participants were Star India acting for the 20th Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising and some of their Indian popular soaps; sporting events major IMG; Global Brands Group who manage brands and international properties as master licensees, commercial agents and owners and have partnered with brands such as FIFA, PGA Tour, Warner Bros Consumer Products, Disney, etc.

Suppliers of kids programming worldwide DIC, which has partnerships with broadcasters globally and are licensors for brands such as McDonald’s and Strawberry Shortcake, BBC Worldwide, Lifestyle products and services delivery group –the Extreme Group and Sesame Street’s Sesame Group were also present among others.

The seminar covered various matters including legal issues and anti-piracy strategies, building brands, India’s changing retail environment, broadcasting opportunities, licensee perspectives and licensed promotions.
