MUMBAI: Yahoo! has announced the launch of a contest designed to give the advertising industry professionals direct, hands-on experience in user generated content (UGC).

The contest titled "Big Shot in Cannes," kicked off on 27 February and will run upto 7 May, is inviting members of the advertising community to create online public service announcements that are designed to raise awareness of and provoke thought and action regarding worthy environmental issues and causes. Potential topics include water conservation, climate change, animal protection, desertification, and renewable energy.

The contest will culminate with a special presentation of the winners during the International Advertising Festival in June, informs an official release.

"Yahoo! wants the advertising community to embrace, rather than fear, the explosion in user generated content," said Jerry Shereshewsky, Yahoo! Ambassador Plenipotentiary to Madison Avenue. "The best way to do that is to dive in, get your hands dirty, and participate in this worthwhile contest. Our goal is to heighten awareness of important environmental issues, while offering advertising professionals an opportunity to gain a better understanding of how people and brands can connect through user generated content."

The advertising community is invited to view and vote online for their favourite entries at http://promotions.yahoo.com/bigshot. A panel of judges from the world's leading advertising agencies will choose three grand prize contest winners.

Each of the winners will receive a free trip to Cannes, France, coinciding with the International Advertising Festival, which begins 17 June. The winning public service announcements will be entered into the 2008 Festival. Winners also will receive an iconic Yahoo! Big Idea Chair, which is awarded by Yahoo! at its creative conferences and major advertising award shows to recognize ground-breaking creativity.

In addition, winning entries will be featured in the ACT Responsible exhibition, adjacent to the International Advertising Festival in Cannes, which showcases outstanding advertising campaigns that focus on environmental and social responsibility issues, adds the release.
