NEW DELHI: An Indian public service advertisement on child prostitution won the Silver award for the second prize at the United Nations Public Service Advertising Awards function in New York earlier this week.

Leo Burnett India won for “The Tip” a television spot about child prostitution produced for Prerana, a non-governmental organization working to prevent child abuse.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Kiyo Akasaka presented the United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI) awards to advertising agencies from Belgium, China, India, Philippines and the United Kingdom at the International Advertising Awards function at Metropolitan Pavilion, New York City.

The Gold Award went to Leo Burnett Belgium for a print campaign, 'Car, Fridge, Washing Machine, Radiator', produced for the Belgian Environmental Division on the subject of energy conservation.

Jointly sponsored by UNDPI and the New York Festivals, the awards were established in 1990 to honour advertising that best exemplifies the ideals and goals of the United Nations. This year’s panel of judges reviewed more than 100 television, radio and print submissions on UN-related themes such as peace and security, climate change and racial prejudice and selected the top four to receive the UNDPI awards.

Two Bronze Awards went to Y & R Philippines for 'Bullets/Warship/Cross', a print campaign produced for Soroptimist International Malaysia, in which a historical timeline contrasts life-threatening devices invented by men with life-saving devices invented by women; and Viking FM of the United Kingdom for a radio spot on hate crime, produced for the City of Hull.

In addition, the United Nations recognized Duval Guillaume of Belgium; HangTang Communication Group of China; Jimenez Basic Advertising of the Philippines; and CCHM: Ping of the United Kingdom.

The New York Festivals, founded in 1957 oversees six international awards competitions in film and video, television programming and promotions, radio programming and promotions, television and radio advertising, design and print advertising, and interactive media.
