NEW DELHI: Drama, fanfare, a jaw-dropping presentation: the launch of three Samsung Metal Series phones - SGH E840, SGH D900i and SGH D840. These were unveiled by actress Dia Mirza and displayed a style statement, which is the philosophy behind the design of the new products.

Samsung country marketing head Asim Warsi said that while India, which is witnessing a 100 per cent growth annually and is critical for the company’s global plans, the Metal Series is meant for the growing customer base which is between 20 and 40.

The latest SGH E840 is also the World’s Slimmest Slide-up phone, said Warsi, and is an improvement over the world’s slimmest earlier, which had also come from the Samsung stable in July 2007.

“The Metal Series phones transcend the current market offering by presenting consumers the immaculate metallic silver cased body. These phones derive their inner strength through powerful cutting edge multimedia features,” Warsi said.

Samsung Telecommunications India MD H. C. Ryu said, “India is a very critical market for Samsung and the launch of World’s slimmest slider Metal phone is a testimony to our commitment to meet the growing aspirations of consumers for sleek, aesthetically designed phones that accentuate their personality without compromising on premium multimedia capabilities.”

He further added, “The Metal Series range completely embodies everything that Indian consumers are seeking in a mobile in terms of unique metallic design and flawless performance, making it an instant attraction to business users, fashion conscious consumers and multimedia enthusiasts.”

The design inspiration of the Metal series is drawn from the core attributes of Metal itself - Power and Prestige.

Designed for the power player of tomorrow the slim metallic phones is a combination of stylish looks and sturdiness.

However, Warsi was quick to point out that looks were not the end-all and sturdiness of function has been of utmost importance to the company.

Three new models were launched today, the first being SGH E840, the world’s slimmest slide-up metallic phone, equipped with full mirror LCD, hidden touch keypad and 2.22” wide TFT LCD screen.

The phone has used premium materials such as tempered glass and metal.

With elegant design the phone is equipped with high end multimedia features like two mega pixel camera, FM Radio, MP3 player, mobile printing, document viewer and 70 MB internal memory with expandable microSD T flash external memory (up to 2GB).

The second model, SGH D900i, is the new avatar of Worlds Best Mobile phone D900 for 2007 (as declared at GSM Association’s Global Mobile Award), the company statement said.

The 12.9 mm slim slider comes with artistically designed metal lining body offering loads of high-end multimedia features like 3 mega pixel camera with dynamic user interfaces, vivid 262K color screen, Bluetooth stereo headset, FM Radio, New camera UI, enhanced battery life and speedy shutter.

Finally, the SGH D840 is a metal finished mobile phone equipped with entertainment features like 2 Megapixel Camera, MP3 player with integrated dual speaker, multi-format music player for listening music on your Bluetooth stereo headsets wirelessly alongwith 80 MB of internal memory and external microSD memory.

Competitively priced, the range runs between Rs 12,000-plus and Rs 14,999, but is not Linux enabled, as Warsi admitted when asked.

It was an interesting presentation Warsi’s second talk was interrupted – obviously by plan, but had a touch of spontaneity – when Dia suddenly walked in again and said she wanted to check whether the audio quality was the same as on a digital player.

The answer came in the form of a video number being played, and the obviously satisfied Dia said she would settle for Samsung now.

All the Metal Series phones are secured with revolutionary mobile tracker, emergency SMS alert and privacy lock that provides peace of mind to mobile consumer.

Warsi said that there were large expansion plans for the company’s marketing initiative, with a new Samsung branded retail outlet being opened in one of the top-notch malls in the Delhi National Capital Region soon, followed by another one at Bangalore at the end of this year.

The company has a production unit in Haryana, Ryu responded to a query, but that would not be producing these sets, which could take another six months to commence production in the country.
