Delhi Half Marathon raises Rs 14.6 million for charity

NEW DELHI: The third edition of the Vodafone Delhi Half Marathon has proved a perfect platform for participants to give towards causes of their choice. Money raised has grossed over Rs 14.6 million.

This was announced today by Arup Banerji, head events, GiveIndia, the official charity partner for the event.

As the official charity partner, GiveIndia has ensured that funds are disbursed to over 42 participating NGOs, as earmarked by each individual runner or company. Udayan Care has received the largest share of roughly Rs 1,817,000 through this event.

According to an offical release, the funds raised through this marathon will reach out to over 100,000 underprivileged people in different parts of India, helping a wide array of causes from restoring vision, to caring for orphaned children, protecting people from HIV AIDS and helping the disabled, providing livelihoods to poor farmers and educating children for a brighter future.

Commenting on the success of the event, North Vodafone Essar operations director Sanjoy Mukerji says, "We would like to thank the citizens of Delhi and everyone who has associated with the marathon for their support, helping us make this event immensely significant to the lives of many people. We are proud to support different causes under the Vodafone Delhi Half Marathon banner through the funds that have been raised."

The occasion was also used to announce the awarding of the IAAF Gold Label to the Vodafone Delhi Half Marathon in 2008, which is a clear indication of the stupendous growth the event has made and the impact it has created among the running community worldwide and the powers that govern the sport.
