MUMBAI: Nike has announced the launch of the Air Zoom Yorker, a cricket shoe created exclusively for fast bowlers. Their latest innovation was unveiled at a function attended by international fast bowlers - Shane Bond and S. Sreesanth.

The Air Zoom Yorker boasts of being a technically superior product, designed to give bowlers an extra edge allowing them to enhance their on-field performance. Other key features of the shoe include increased durability, superior touch and less water retention. In addition, Air Zoom Yorker is re-enforced with the Zoom Air cushioning at the heel and forefront to reduce cleat pressure and increase responsive cushioning, informs an official release.

It has been designed on a last made specifically for cricket. This last has been contoured so that the shoe supports the foot's arch and holds the foot in place, keeping the bowler from slipping forward and helping to protect his toes from being jammed into the front of the shoe, adds the release.

Also available in this series is the Air Zoom Opener - a similar performance innovation for batsmen. Further, Nike is also introducing a range of performance apparel and accessories, including Indian cricket replica jerseys, training gear, kit bags, backpacks etc. designed exclusively for cricket. Both the Yorker and Opener will be available in the Indian market by 15 September 2006.

Nike Inc senior developer Chris Cook said, "Nike's commitment to provide innovative performance enhancing products for its athletes and the game of cricket has ensured that these shoes have been designed and introduced after a high degree of research spanning different cricket playing countries. Our research spanned many keys areas such as comfort, cushioning, flexibility, traction, stability and shoe weight."

According to Cook, biomechanical studies on bowling and batting action, conducted at Nike's research facility (Nike Sports Research Lab) in Beaverton, have also been incorporated in the design of the shoe. The wear testing process was also conducted in different cricket playing countries where cricket players at different levels (state, national and international) provided feedback and confirmed the superiority of design over an 18 month period.
